HbA1c Test: Your 3-Month Sugar Report Card, Explained

2026-07-10 · 2 min read

If a fasting sugar test is a photograph, the HbA1c is a video — it shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months in a single number. That's why doctors rely on it both to diagnose diabetes and to track how well it's controlled.

What exactly does it measure?

Sugar in your blood naturally sticks to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells. The more sugar circulating over time, the more "sugar-coated" (glycated) hemoglobin you accumulate. Since red blood cells live about 120 days, the HbA1c percentage reflects your true average — one sweet breakfast or one skipped meal can't fool it.

What do the numbers mean?

  • Below 5.7% — normal
  • 5.7% to 6.4% — prediabetes: the warning zone where lifestyle changes work best
  • 6.5% or above — diabetes range (your doctor will usually confirm with a repeat test)

For people already managing diabetes, most doctors aim for an HbA1c around 7% or below, personalised to age and health.

Do I need to fast?

No — that's one of its conveniences. You can do an HbA1c at any time of day, fed or fasting. No special preparation is needed.

How often should it be done?

  • No diabetes, but risk factors (family history, weight, age 40+): once a year
  • Prediabetes: every 6 months
  • Diabetes: every 3 months until stable, then as your doctor advises

The bottom line

A single sugar reading can mislead; your HbA1c can't. If you haven't checked yours in the last year — especially if diabetes runs in your family — it's one of the most useful ₹450 health investments you can make. It's included in our Diabetic Check and Full Body packages, or can be booked on its own with home collection.
