Iron-Deficiency Anemia: Why 'Just Tired' Is Worth Testing
2026-05-28 · 2 min read
"I'm just tired all the time" is one of the most common things people say — and one of the most commonly dismissed. Very often the cause is iron-deficiency anemia, the single most frequent nutritional deficiency in India, and it hits women hardest.
Why women, especially
Monthly blood loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding and diets low in absorbable (animal-source) iron stack the odds. A large share of Indian women of reproductive age are anemic — many without ever being told, because the symptoms are so easy to write off as stress or a busy life.
The symptoms, once you know to look
- Persistent tiredness and low stamina
- Breathlessness on stairs or mild exertion
- Pale skin, inner eyelids and nail beds
- Hair fall and brittle nails
- Poor concentration, headaches, feeling cold
- Sometimes an odd craving to chew ice (a genuine, well-known clue)
What the tests show
Two layers give the full picture:
The CBC flags anemia and describes it. Low hemoglobin confirms it; small, pale red cells (a low MCV) point specifically towards iron deficiency rather than other causes.
Iron studies confirm and quantify it. The key value is ferritin — your body's iron savings account. Ferritin drops before hemoglobin does, so it catches deficiency early, and it's the number doctors watch when treating. Serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation round out the picture.
Why you shouldn't just self-prescribe iron
It's tempting to buy an iron tonic and move on — but two things matter. First, too much iron is harmful, so treatment should match your actual level. Second, in adults (especially men and post-menopausal women), iron deficiency can occasionally be the first sign of slow blood loss that needs its own attention. Testing first means you treat the right problem the right way.
The fix, and the follow-up
For most people it's straightforward: iron supplements taken correctly (with vitamin C, away from tea and calcium, which block absorption) plus better diet. Improvement in energy often comes within weeks, but rebuilding stores takes months — so a recheck after about 3 months confirms you've truly refilled the tank. A CBC is included in every Lab24 package; iron studies can be added, with free home collection.
