Vitamin D: The Sunshine Deficiency in a Sunny City

2026-07-13 · 2 min read

Here's a paradox we see every week: Hyderabad gets sunshine almost year-round, yet vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common results on our reports. Studies across Indian cities put deficiency rates well above 70%. If you spend your days indoors, the sun outside your window isn't reaching your skin.

Why "sunny" doesn't mean "sufficient"

Your skin makes vitamin D only when direct sunlight hits it — not through glass, not under sunscreen, and much less through darker skin, which needs longer exposure. Add air-conditioned offices, covering clothing, indoor jobs and the genuine heat that keeps people inside from 11 AM to 4 PM, and the result is a city full of people who are sunlit but vitamin-D-starved.

The symptoms are easy to miss

Deficiency rarely announces itself. It hides as:

  • Tiredness that sleep doesn't fix
  • Aching bones and muscles, especially the lower back and legs
  • Frequent infections — vitamin D supports immunity
  • Low mood, more noticeable in people who are always indoors
  • Hair fall and slow-healing niggles

Because each of these has a dozen other explanations, the only way to know is to measure it.

The test

It's a single blood sample — 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the storage form that reflects your true level. No fasting, any time of day. Results are read as:

  • Below 20 ng/mL — deficient
  • 20–30 ng/mL — insufficient
  • Above 30 ng/mL — sufficient

Who should check?

Almost any indoor adult is a fair candidate, but especially: office workers, older adults, women (particularly during pregnancy or menopause), anyone with persistent bone or muscle aches, and people already low who are on treatment and need a recheck after 3 months.

The reassuring part

Deficiency is simple and cheap to correct — usually a weekly supplement dose for a couple of months, then a maintenance plan, plus a bit more genuine sunlight on the arms in the early morning. Retesting after the course confirms you've actually topped up rather than guessing. Vitamin D is included in our Full Body Advanced package, or can be added to any booking with free home collection.
